Chuck Houser

April 6, 1949 — April 30, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond C. “Chuck” Houser III, who passed away peacefully at the age of 74, on April 30, 2023, after a courageous battle with ALS. Chuck was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

Chuck was born on April 6, 1949 in Chambersburg to Raymond C. Houser II and Elizabeth Remmel Houser. After graduating from Chambersburg Area Senior High School in 1967, he joined the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict. After Vietnam he was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co., and he also built several houses on the side. Chuck was a passionate outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and spend time in the mountains. The last 8 years of his life he managed to continue these passions with grace and grit from his wheelchair and with the help of friends.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Cathy of 38 years; his children: Heather (David) Hogan of Richmond, VA, Chad(Miranda) Shipp, Jason (Paula) Shipp of Louisville, KY; sisters: Verity(Richard) Tolbert, Frankie Houser; brother: David Houser; grandchildren: Drew, Kye, and Brody Hogan; Tyler and Macy Shipp; Emma and Rebecca Shipp; his niece Christal (Ralph)Boone; great niece, Marlaina (Gavin) Hartz; and his great nephew Zachary Boone as well as many dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his nephew Brook Tolbert, and his half-brother Otis Wesley Eyer, Jr. Throughout his life, Chuck faced many challenges, including a difficult disease, which he battled with strength and courage. Despite the adversity he faced, he never lost his love for life or his positive outlook on the world. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, and his strength and resilience will be remembered for years to come.

Chuck was a devoted husband to Cathy and a loving father to his children and grandchildren. He instilled in them a love of nature and a respect for the outdoors that they will carry with them always. He was a great friend to many and was always there to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace Chuck. You will be forever loved and remembered.
