Gerald D. “Jerry” Shipp, 92, of Chambersburg, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at his home. Born November 22, 1931 in Shippensburg, he was the adopted son of late Richard and Alice Rummell Shipp and biological son of the late Walter S. and Florence Mowery Davis. His beloved wife of 67 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Shipp, preceded him in death on October 4, 2021.
Jerry was a 1950 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. A US Navy veteran, he served honorably from 1950 – 1954 during the Korean War. Early in his life, Jerry was employed at Diller Oil. He was the owner/operator of Shipp Burial Vault in Chambersburg for a number of years and later worked for Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home and Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home. Jerry was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Chambersburg. He also was a charter member of the Greene Township Lions Club where he achieved perfect attendance for 65 years. Jerry served several terms on the Chambersburg Borough Council. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and visited Gotemba, Japan (Chambersburg’s sister city), Germany, and Hawaii. He and his family enjoyed spending time at Cape May, NJ where they stayed in the same condo for many vacations.
He is survived by four children, Dona S. Kegerreis (Rick) of Chambersburg, Jere R. Shipp (Sharon) of Chambersburg, Lisa S. Hess (Dennis) of St. Thomas, and Gina S. Rost (Thomas) of Ft. Myers, FL; seven grandchildren, Austin Kegerreis (Candace), Lauren Roberts (Chase), Jere Ryan Shipp (Kara), Hali Cormany (Alex), Coleman Rost, Davis Rost, and Lauren Krosley Rost; and ten great-grandchildren, Addilyn Noel Kegerreis, Richard Grayson Kegerreis, Henry Austin Kegerreis, Millie Kate Kegerreis, Payton Elizabeth Roberts, Sophie Mae Roberts, Emory Lee Roberts, Jace Ray Shipp, Anna Joy Cormany, and Judah Davis Cormany; and his brother, Norman Davis of Greencastle. Aside from his parents and wife, Jerry was preceded in death by five siblings, Harold Davis, Carl Davis, Jim Davis, Pearl Melius and Helen Oberholtzer; and one grandson, Spencer Kegerreis.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Caroline E. Saxton will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
