Janet Louise (Shank) Eberly, age 86, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Born February 5, 1940, in Chambersburg, PA she was the daughter of the late Glenn and Mae (Lehman) Shank.
Janet's life was guided by her faith in God, and she was happiest when surrounded by her family. She was the faithful wife and loving mother who, with her husband, managed a large dairy farm for many years. She created colorful, well-tended flower gardens, and in her 50's she completed the Penn State Master Gardener course. She greatly enjoyed sharing flowers that she had grown with others. Janet was a member of Grand Point Church. In her younger years, she taught Sunday School at Cedar Street Mennonite Church, worked at Snavely's Garden Corner in Chambersburg, PA, sang with the Gospel Tide Hour, and traveled widely with her husband Eugene, enjoying God's beautiful and varied creation. Those who knew her will remember her hard-working nature, her beautiful Christ-like spirit, and her wit when you least expected it.
In heaven, Janet joins those who preceded her in death, including her husband Eugene, to whom she was married nearly 60 years before his passing in 2020.
She is survived by her five children, Lynn (Sue) Eberly of Fayetteville, PA; Darrell (Twila) Eberly of Lancaster, PA; Carolyn (John) Kreider of Lancaster, PA; Jay (Debbie) Eberly of Cedar Rapids, IA; and Rose (Denver) Sommers of Leola, PA; 13 grandchildren, Diane (Nick) Helman, Stephanie (Wes) Stahl, Amanda (Chris) Wong, Dallas (Sarah) Eberly, Katelyn (Jeremy) Hunsberger, Tyler (Aubrey) Kreider, Kelly (Josh) Tucker, Logan (Amy) Kreider, Lindsey Kreider, Isaac (Anya) Sommers, Ethan (Maya) Sommers, Aidan (Adrianne) Sommers, and Elliot Sommers; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Janet was the oldest of seven, survived by three brothers and three sisters; Gerald (Ethel) Shank of Lititz, PA; Rachel (Glenn) Wadel of Chambersburg, PA; Wayne (Miriam) Shank of Chambersburg, PA; Judi (Edwin) Martin of Chambersburg, PA; Glenda (wife of the late Jeryl) Martin of Chambersburg, PA; and Carlton (Lisa) Shank of Mechanicsburg, PA. In addition, Janet is remembered by many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss her.
A Celebration of Janet's life will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Chambersburg Mennonite Church, 1880 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201 with Rev. Ron Cook officiating. Graveside services will be private for the family in Chambersburg Mennonite Church Cemetery.
