Johanna Spierenburg

Johanna Maria Spierenburg, 89, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Hyattsville, MD, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Providence Place Senior Living. Born February 18, 1934 in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Hermanus and Johanna Koek Verdel. Her beloved husband, Gysbertus (Bart) C. Spierenburg, preceded her in death on September 12, 1995.

Johanna and her husband immigrated to the US in 1957 and later settled in Hyattsville, MD. She dedicated her life to making a home for her family and enjoyed dancing, sewing and knitting. Johanna was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Landover Hills, MD.

She is survived by three children, John Spierenburg (Diana) of Chambersburg, Ronald Spierenburg (Shannon) of Bowie, MD, and Patrick Spierenburg of Edgewater, MD; five grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph, Sarah, Melanie and Amber; ten great grandchildren; and one sister, Corrie Albers, of Australia. Aside from her parents and husband, Johanna was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Fr. Smith will celebrate. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD will be on Monday, September 11, 2023 at 1:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM on Wednesday morning, September 6, 2023, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
