John Harvey Hoffman, 82, of Chambersburg, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at his home. Born June 28, 1941 in Lykens, PA, he was the son of the late Harvey Henry Hoffman and Ruth Naomi Reese Hoffman.
John was a 1959 graduate of the former John Harris High School in Harrisburg, PA. He was employed as a police officer with the City of Harrisburg and Lower Paxton Township. After his service in the police department, John was employed in the HR department with United Telephone Eastern Group, the Chambersburg Hospital, and finally the Shook Home in Chambersburg. He later worked part-time for the Chambersburg Area School District in the Custodial Department. John was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He had served as president of the Chambersburg Kiwanis Club, and was a 3rd Degree member of the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus Council 2551, and a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus Assembly 924 in Chambersburg. John enjoyed target shooting, fishing and was known for telling great stories. He was also very proud of his family and enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judith M. Hamilton Hoffman, whom he married on April 23, 1965; three children, Heather Ann Hall (husband Gregory) of Carlisle, Jody Lee Smith (husband George) of Camp Hill, and Christopher J. Hoffman (wife Lori) of Hanover; seven grandchildren, Cameron W. Smith, Paxton J. Smith, Chelsea V. Becker (husband Chad), Christopher J. Hoffman II, Chase W. Hoffman, Joseph C. Hall (fiancée Julia), and Elizabeth A. Hall (fiancé, Bertalan Papp); three great grandchildren, Landon D. Becker, Logan T. Becker, and Sebastian J. Smith; one sister, Wilma Paul (husband Lawrence) of Columbus, OH; and several nieces and nephews. Aside from his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara R. Blausch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Fr. Allan Wolfe will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 9:30 – 11:00 AM at the church. Private interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Catholic Church or to Corpus Christi Catholic School, 279 N. Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17021.
