John M. Ommert, 96, of Chambersburg, passed away on February 2, 2026, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born December 29, 1929 in Williamson, PA, he was the son of the late Ray and Mary Hoover Ommert. His beloved wife, Mary E. Ommert, whom he married on September 3, 1948, preceded him in death on January 27, 2012.
While growing up, John helped his parents on the farm. He was a 1947 graduate of the former St. Thomas High School. John started his career in at Letterkenny as a clerk in 1950 after hearing on the radio that they were hiring 100 people a day. He retired as a System Analyst with DESCOM at Letterkenny Army Depot in 1986 after 35 years. After his retirement, he worked at the ACME store located on LWE and Coldbrook Ave for 15 years. John was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, the George Washington Masonic Lodge #143 F&AM for over 50 years, and NARFE. He was a former member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fayetteville for many years. He enjoyed league bowling at Lincoln Lanes, camping with his children and grandchildren, spending time along the Potomac River, playing double deck pinochle and watermelon.
He is survived by three children, Donald E. Ommert of FL, Deborah A. Smith (husband Larry) of Hanover, PA, and Sharon L. Bennett of Fayetteville, PA; eight grandchildren; Laurie Lilley, Seth Parr, Derek Ommert, Ashley Sowers, Ryan Ommert, Samantha Ommert, Andrew Ommert and Tyler Ommert; eleven great grandchildren; one brother, Ted Ommert of Newburg, PA; sister-in-law, Mary Perry of Shippensburg; and nephew, Dave Ommert and wife Denise of Shippensburg. Aside from his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis and Allan Ommert; and his brother, Wayne Ommert.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 6, 2026, in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Christopher Frye will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
