Betty Karper, 100, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, PA, following a courageous battle with cancer and a life well lived.
Born on September 5, 1925, to Philip Bikle and Mary Goldsmith Bikle, Betty began her life in a home without electricity, indoor plumbing, or a telephone. She witnessed a century of extraordinary change, starting her education in the very first class of Duffield Grade School and graduating from Chambersburg High School in 1943. Betty attended Wilson College until her life took a romantic and historic turn. On July 9, 1945, she married Jay E. Karper almost immediately upon his return from flying 75 missions over Europe during World War II. Together, Betty and Jay owned and managed the Mont Alto Orchard Co. While tending to the land, they raised four sons. Betty was particularly proud that all four of her sons despite the challenges of dyslexia graduated from college with degrees in STEM fields, a testament to her steadfast support and dedication as a mother.
Betty was a woman of many talents and passions. She was a gifted cook, an avid gardener, and a creative spirit who loved painting. She found joy in walking, traveling the world, and cherished the vibrant community of friends she made during her years at Menno Haven.
She is survived by a large and loving family: Children Linda Karper (widow of Cyrus) of Biglerville, PA; Cedric Karper, PE (Robyn) of Raleigh, NC; C. Scott Karper, VMD (Diane) of Chambersburg, PA; and Calvin Karper, PE (Marilyn) of Oklahoma City, OK. Sister Joanne Bikle of Havertown, PA. 8 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Jay E. Karper; her eldest son, Cyrus Karper, MES; and her great-grandson, Cyrus King Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 27, 2026 at Menno Haven Brookview Healthcare Center Chapel, 1000 Northfield Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Chaplain Lori Witmer will officiate. Private interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
