Richard L. Metzler, 93, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Martinsburg, PA, was welcomed to his eternal home in Heaven with Jesus on Monday, May 20, 2024. Born February 8, 1931 in Roaring Spring, PA, he was a son of the late D. Elmer and Sarah Lena Stoltzfus Metzler. His beloved wife of 66 years, Ingrid Metzler, whom he married on April 2, 1955, preceded him in death on February 2, 2022.
Richard and his late wife met as students at Goshen College in Goshen, IN. Richard earned his Bachelor’s Degree there and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He was employed as a teacher in Indiana from the late 1950’s until 1963 when he and his family moved to the Martinsburg, PA area and he began teaching at Central High School. He taught in the Spring Cove School District until his retirement in 1993. Richard owned and operated a farm in Morrisons Cove during his early years teaching. Farming was a passion in his life. He also enjoyed model airplanes and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates baseball fan. In their retirement, Richard and his wife moved to Chambersburg, PA and were members of the Chambersburg Mennonite Church where he also served in various leadership and volunteer positions. He served on the board of directors for Menno Haven Retirement Community and he was also a member of the Gideons organization.
He is survived by three sons, Steven L. Metzler (Donna) of Fredericksburg, VA, Stuart C. Metzler of McDonald, PA, and F. Peter Metzler (Kellie) of Gibsonia, PA; four grandchildren, Lukas R. Metzler, Stephanie L. Metzler, Chase T. Metzler, and Elsie N. Metzler; and six siblings. Aside from his wife and parents, Richard was preceded in death by three siblings; and his daughter-in-law, Tina Metzler.
A Celebration of Life to honor Richard will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, May 30, 2024 at the Chambers Pointe Manor Building Chapel, 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Dale Lehman will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM in Chambersburg Mennonite Church Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, PA.
