Robert G. “Bob” Carnahan, Jr., 79, of Fayetteville, PA, passed away on October 7, 2025, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, leaving behind the legacy of a kind heart, quick wit and deep devotion to family and friends. Born on February 26, 1946, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Robert G. Carnahan, Sr., and Rita Gallagher Carnahan.
Bob had a varied and impactful career as a mechanical designer, during which he lent his expertise to several federal government agencies. His notable achievements included designing control rooms for nuclear devices and contributing to the development of an underwater swimmer detection system used by Navy Seals. His professional life was dedicated to excellence, and he approached every project with a commitment to service that reflected his honorable military background.
From 1966 to 1969, Bob served with courage in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, earning the respect of all who knew him as a brave soldier committed to the United States of America. His military service greatly influenced his values and character, shaping him into the gentleman that family and friends cherished.
A lifelong baseball enthusiast, Bob followed numerous teams, including the Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, and Texas Rangers, deeply engaging in the sport he adored. His passion for baseball was matched only by his zest for life and adventure, which he shared with Carolyn.
Bob's personal journey included a remarkable experience living in Paris for two years during high school while his father worked for the Federal Aviation Administration. This culturally enriching period undoubtedly contributed to his love for travel which he pursued passionately throughout his life, visiting every state in the U.S. and exploring various countries across Europe, with a particular fondness for Iceland.
For two decades, Bob and his beloved wife, Carolyn, called Texas home before making the transition to the Penn National community in Fayetteville, PA. Their bond was a testament to love and companionship, as Bob is remembered as a marvelous husband, respectful and gentle towards all.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Chase; two sisters, Joan (the late Joseph) Hosmer of Silver Spring, MD, and Judy (Jim) Connor of Apex, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
