Mr. Virgil J. McGough, Sr., 86, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Friday, May 16, 2025 in Mercy House, Chambersburg. Born November 10, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of the late Henry and Virginia (Buggy) McGough.
He was a graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School, Class of 1956. Virgil attended Temple University where he studied mechanical engineering. He began his 42 year long career with the Budd Company, Philadelphia, PA. He started as an apprentice tool & die maker, working his way up to Vice President of Manufacturing and Engineering at the time of his retirement in 2001.
Virgil was a devout lifelong Catholic. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg where he was an active volunteer and served with the Accounting Group. He enjoyed golfing, wood-working and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Lynne (Samuel) McGough who he married August 20, 1960 in Bellmawr, NJ; two children, Virgil “John” McGough, Jr. and his wife Mary of Chambersburg and Susan Barry and her husband, Dan of Racine, WI; three granddaughters, Jillian, Tatiana, and Victoria; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler, Armand, and Olivia; a brother, Henry McGough, Jr. of Marmora, NJ; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and David McGough.
A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 22, 2025 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201 with Fr. Benjamin Kwaghgba officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church narthex. Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi’s St. Vincent De Paul Ministry at the above church address.
